Radio Signals - Week 33

What a busy week this has been! On the thirteenth I took the 20 hour trek back to the United States, which involved me waking up at 5AM to take the metro 北門/Beimen to transfer to the 桃園機場捷運/Taoyuan Airport MRT, to then take a 12.5 hour flight to San Francisco, and then a 4.5 hour flight to Indianapolis, plus some hours for driving out of Indy.

Today, the news came that I had been dreading for years: Nintendo will be ending support for Pokemon Bank, the technology that allowed Pokemon to be transferred between X&Y and Sun & Moon and also all 3DS Pokemon to the Switch, on February 26th, 2027.

Fo Guang Shan and the Selling of a Holy Place (Day 10)

Anyone who has looked into places to visit in 台灣/Taiwan outside of 台北/Taipei is sure to have seen the 佛光山寺/Fo Guang Shan Monastery in 高雄/Kaohsiung recommended, all for good reason. It’s one of the largest monasteries in Taiwan with name brand recognizablity across the island and increasingly so in Mainland China. Since my research is in contemporary Buddhist holy sites, obviously I had to check it out. Admittedly I did not go to the actual monastery grounds, but I went to the adjacent Buddha Museum. And here is where I found something interesting.

Weekly Recap - Week 32 (Day 9)

Welcome back to the weekly recap series! It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these; I think the true last time was in January of this year. I wanted to bring them back as these reflections make me more cognizant of what I’ve done in a week, along with what I’ve actually consumed digitally. Plus, it being Blaugust means that I am back into the habit of blogging!

MedievalOS (Day 8)

I began using Arch in January of this year once I received my Framework 16. Since my programming skills are close to non-existent but I wanted a tiling window manager, I followed a basic tutorial for setup and installed Hyprland. Truly the only visual difference since then is I have a Chiikawa background, but inspired about learning about the toxicity and transphobia of the creator of Hyprland, I’ve been inspired to remove it from my set-up and reevaluate my design at large.

Allowing Myself to Rest (Day 7)

Today was the last day of my immersive Chinese classes at National Taiwan Normal University, although I will still be in the country for another week or so. At the end of class today, I simply went home, took a three hour nap, and then started up Europa Universalis IV again after not playing for eight months. For me, this was a genuinely radical act!

Why Study Religion? (Day 6)

I was an oddly contemplative child. Most likely owing to an unfortunate set of genes that predisposed me to severe depression and anxiety, I spent most of my childhood feeling like I was utterly lost in the entire world. I could not understand the purpose of my existence or why suffering was abound in our world. I felt an attraction to something that was beyond myself – I very firmly believed that there was some sort of spiritual essence that was an addition to the physical world – but I had no idea how to pinpoint it. As a result, I became a sort of religious wanderer. I played around with Christianity and Islam for a bit before settling into Wicca and neopaganism for my teenage years. I would now describe myself as Buddhist with influence from neopaganism.

Start Dream Journaling! (Day 5)

I think one of the coolest things any person can do is dream journal. I know what many of you are probably thinking: I don’t remember my dreams, I forget them instantly upon waking up, they are boring, etc. These are all something (well… maybe except the last one) that can be easily changed by starting a dream journaling habit. It’s something that I do almost every morning, and the only times I haven’t has been when I decided to go back to sleep or I, in my foolish fugue state, believe that I will surely remember this dream and can write it down later. Spoiler alert: I never remember.

My First Blog (Day 4)

In my pursuit of the Community Builder badge, I’ll be responding to the group prompts given out for certain days! Today’s is “Tell us all about your very first blog!” which should be pretty easy as my blogging attempts have been… rather lackluster. My first blog comes from my time over at Neocities. My first blog post comes all the way back March 1st, 2024. I’d replicate them here, but I don’t think they have much interest as it is primarily just me complaining about being busy (so I guess things haven’t really changed in two years!). I’ve deleted blog posts with every time I’ve restarted my blog, but I hope to bring some over from my last site iteration, as I began doing weekly recaps and I think there is some value in the ones I produced

My Favorite Games (Day 3)

In line with Blaugust’s beginnings primarily beginning with gaming blogs, for the third day of Blaugust I wanted to discuss some of my favorite video games. Now note that I am not much of a gamer anymore; I am always very busy and I just do not have a whole lot of time for gaming. But, I still enjoy it from time to time!

Language Learning (Day 2)

Despite the fact that I have been interested in learning languages ever since my pre-teens, it is perhaps a bit embarrassing that the only language I’m fluent in is in English (although my Mandarin abilities are getting there). In any case, I wanted to discuss the languages that I am learning (and that I plan to learn) along with resources for anyone else that is interested.
